WLA LAKE MANAGEMENT2003-2012 WEED TREATMENT PROGRAMINITIAL GOALS: To contain the spread of invasive species, specifically Fanwort, Variable Milfoil and Eurasian Milfoil. Prevent the further of introduction of invasive species through education & prevention. INITIAL STRATEGY: Based on the 2003 GeoSyntec Survey, treat the “hot spots” (High density invasive specie populations in high boat traffic areas, such as marinas & boat launch ramps) to prevent the transport of these species to other parts of the Lake. Attempt to contain the existing invasive species. RESULTS: Using the 2003 GeoSyntec Survey as a baseline, and comparing it to subsequent mini-surveys, and weed treatment plan inspections, we estimate that we have reduced the overall area of invasive species from over 200 acres to less than 50 acres of infestation. This effort accomplished more than "containment". Unfortunately during that same period of time the Asian Clam firmly has firmly established itself throughout the Lake. This program has greatly reduced, and possibly eliminated, the practice of property owners applying their own methods of weed control by using mechanical and chemical techniques. Unregulated raking of invasive species, while offering temporary relief, actually promotes the spread of invasive plants through fragmentation re-growth. The unregulated use of herbicides can result in a hazard to the public, and our water supplies. Please note: The project is a continuing effort to control the amount and spread of these nuisance plants within acceptable levels without destroying the native plants and fish habitat.. Total irradication under present environmental laws and technology is not possible. Each year's control efforts is based on many variables including, but not limited to, rainfall, lake levels, stormwater runoff, lake temperature, duration of ice during the winter months, and lawn fertilization quantity across the entire lake watershed. ANNUAL WEED TREATMENT REPORTS AND MAPS:
FUTURE GOALS:Continue to contain & reduce the invasives, specifically Fanwort, and the Milfoils. Prevent the further of introduction of invasive species by lobbying for State Laws that will make introduction of invasives to any body of water in Massachusetts illegal. Set up a Town Ramp inspection protocol with available educational literature. Lobby for a State Law regulating phosphate containing fertilizers similar to the State of Minnesota standard.
